Naturopath and Acupuncture

Naturopathy, also known as naturopathic medicine, is an alternative to the traditional medical system and focuses on attacking the root cause of symptoms.  Naturopathic doctors focus on finding the root cause of a disease and its symptoms rather than masking symptoms with prescription drugs.  Naturopathic doctors utilize a wide array of tool to identify and treat many common illnesses and afflictions.  Naturopathic doctors are trained in acupuncture, botanic and physical medicine, nutrition and homeopathy. They must complete a bachelor’s degree prior to entry. At the end of training they receive a doctor of naturopathic medicine degree.

A visit to a Naturopathic doctor, what should I expect?

Visiting a certified naturopathic doctor will be very similar to a visit with your family doctor.  At the initial visit the naturopathic doctor will make an extensive examination of the patient.  This includes a thorough family history, a physical examination and may require laboratory tests.  The naturopathic doctor will identify dietary problems, ask you about stress as well as lifestyle and environmental exposure.  By understanding the patient as a whole, the naturopath can make a better assessment of the patient’s overall health and identify the cause of symptoms.  The naturopathic doctor treats the person as a whole and does not focus on specific symptoms that may be caused by unlikely imbalances that traditional doctors may fail to diagnose.

Common naturopathic treatments:
Nutritional counseling, acupuncture, herbal medicine, detoxification,  hydrotherapy, homothetic medicine, physical medicine etc.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical treatment which involves inserting and manipulating needles into various points in the body.  Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, relieve pain caused by arthritis, injury or illness and improve mood and energy.  Acupuncture is based on the theory that the human body has a system of energy “rivers” that run throughout the body and its surface.  Sometimes there rivers get obstructed and overflow resulting in an imbalance in the body that may manifest itself as pain, tiredness, lack of energy or other symptoms.  By inserting needles into the body the acupuncturist can manipulate the rivers and restore the energy flow balance in the patient’s body.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

The short answer is NO. Most patients do not report any pain or discomfort when undergoing acupuncture by a trained and certified acupuncturist. Some patients with a fear of needles may experience a slight discomfort during their initial treatment.
