Ranil Kumara, PT

Ranil leads our team of physiotherapists, and together, they have built a successful practice working with patients, including seniors, children, performers and athletes, to develop programs to achieve their patients’ personal goals. Their approach to therapy involves a straightforward look at the factors affecting injury, such as the mechanism of injury, the time since onset (chronic versus acute), sporting/occupational activities and other complicating effects.

Complementing this assessment, Ranil and his team use evidence-based, active-oriented rehabilitation to achieve the best results possible. Ranil believes that the best therapists are those who teach their patients how to relieve short-term symptoms and achieve the long-term goals of their healing process with as little medical intervention as possible, an attitude he carries with him in his practice. In addition, Ranil appreciates the role that medical specialists (sports medicine, orthopaedics, plastics) can play in injury healing and prevention, and does not hesitate to refer to the appropriate specialist through consultation with each patient’s family physician, when it will benefit the patient.

Ranil and his team also believe in the importance of continuing education in the health care field. Ranil has kept current by attending courses in advanced techniques within the scope of physiotherapy, such as acupuncture, which have benefited his patients. In addition to his work at East Liberty Physiotherapy Clinic, Ranil is also part-owner of four other successful clinics in Toronto, as well as a group of fitness facilities in the downtown core.

Ranil has been the consulting physiotherapist for some members of Mirvish and Canstage Productions, the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Dance Theatre, and Ballet Espressivo, as well as students from Danceteq, Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Performance Dance Program at George Brown College, York University’s Department of Dance, Ryerson Theatre School, and the National Ballet School.  In addition, Ranil has been a consulting physiotherapist for Disney’s Cruise Lines Companies for the ships Magic and Wonder since 2001. He has been the personal physiotherapist for numerous professional, semi-professional, and international athletes.

Ranil has been an examiner for both the University of Toronto’s Department of Rehabilitation and the National Physiotherapy Board Examinations. He was a volunteer for the 1996 Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG).

Ranil was a member of the on-site rehabilitation team for numerous skating, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and martial arts competitions including national level competitions such as the 2004 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Competition, Skate Canada Junior Nationals, Skate Canada International, and Skate Canada Festival of Synchronized Skating Championships. Ranil has also been the consulting physiotherapist for members of Hasu Karate Club and Sakura Karate Club since 1995.
